Changing Your Listed Name

At BHCC and Beyond

Hello my name is

Who Is This Guide For?

This guide is for any students at Bunker Hill Community College whose names are not consistent with what's listed in their campus ID, email, or legal documents, and who want to correct this error. Students who have recently changed their name in marriage or divorce, students who are trans, nonbinary, or gender-nonconforming, and students who wish to have a name change respected for any other reason may all benefit from the tips and information on this page.

BHCC Preferred Name Policy

Bunker Hill Community College has a "preferred name" policy which responds to requests for changing one's name in non-legal contexts.

Students may use a preferred first name wherever a legal name is not required on internal documents, communications, systems, and web portals. Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Advising lists
  • Class rosters;
  • Diplomas, awards, and recognitions (optional, by request)
  • Email-BHCC
  • ID Cards-BHCC
  • Moodle

Terminology

A note on terminology:

The use of "preferred name" and "preferred pronoun" as terms can be problematic and invalidating through the implication that one's name and pronouns aren't real, just preferences.

However, this terminology is what is currently used to communicate official changes in names listed at BHCC, so for the purposes of this document "preferred name" will refer to a name used in non-legal contexts.

Your name is your name, and your deadname is not. We apologize for any stress this process causes. This guide exists to hopefully make it a little smoother.
