Afrofuturism: The World of Black Sci-Fi and Fantasy Culture

What is Afrofuturism?

Afrofuturism is primarily a speculative fiction genre centering perspectives and themes of Blackness. Afrofuturism can also be thought of as a theoretical lens of textual analysis, and exploration of history and future with regards to the intersection of African Diaspora culture and technology.

This collection primarily focuses on the genre of Afrofuturism and media by Afrofuturist creators. However, it is also important to understand the real-world implications of Afrofuturist analysis in our time of Big Data and surveillance, and how this lens can guide technological development away from algorithmic anti-blackness and towards Black liberation.

In addition to the speculative fiction media gathered in this guide, I'd like to highlight important work in the intersection of technology and Blackness.
